This course offers the chance to develop skills and knowledge in two or more related fields of study at the intersection of media, business, design and new communications technologies. It offers contextual study of the history, theory, ethics and criticism of the various practices, institutions and discourses in media, communication and information. Foundation skills and knowledge for work in the corporate media and information field is provided with considerable breadth of expertise.

Bachelor of Communications Specialisation
Communication professionals are multi-talented experts who can communicate information across the media and corporate landscape to a large number of people. The Bachelor of Communications – BComms (previously Mass Communication) covers a range of subjects in media and business. Currently, there are five specialisations in Bachelor of Communications (BComms), which are:
- Corporate Screen Communication
- Journalism
- Web Media
- Marketing
- Public Relations
Corporate Screen Communication
This stream teaches concepts and skills for client-based screen production such as advertising and promotion, corporate communications, informational and educational media. Class activities and assignments are designed to closely model industry practice and as such there is a strong emphasis on collaboration and professionalism in all units. Students are encouraged to make the best use their resources and to create work of a high standard suitable for their portfolio. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Communication, this stream provides students with the ability to use the technologies of screen production to understand the planning and implementation of corporate production projects.
Journalism
This stream covers journalism theory and practice through print, broadcast and online media, including learning the legal and ethical conditions under which journalism is practised. When taken in combination with the other elements of the Bachelor of Communications this stream provides students with the ability to communicate effectively, and get an opportunity to publish on a variety of media platforms including online, radio and on television, and understand how contemporary news media operate. Journalism may usefully be combined with the streams in Corporate Screen Production or Public Relations.
Marketing
Marketing is one of the most important functions in building and maintaining a successful business. It’s a dynamic area that involves differentiating the firm from its competitors and persuading the target market to purchase its products or services. In this stream, students will learn and apply marketing principles within specialised areas. These areas include international marketing, marketing research, services marketing, consumer behaviour, retail marketing and internet marketing.
Public Relations
Public Relations develops an understanding of the fundamentals of professional public relations practice. This stream provides students with skills and knowledge in the principles, techniques and specific issues of contemporary public relations. The Public Relations stream may be usefully combined with the Journalism or Corporate Screen Production streams.
Web Media
This stream provides a pathway into employment in the rapidly expanding field of web-based media and communications, from web production to online community management. The stream emphasises social media and networking, and all units involve practical components as well as the core concepts to put you at the forefront of web media. Combined with screen production you will become a multi-skilled web content producer; combined with journalism, you will be a cross-platform writer and reporter.
